This piece speaks to and explores two dialogues. The first dialogue is within myself. I love to paint and I love making felt; which do I choose? The second speaks to a dialogue about the external product of the creative process - if it’s fiber, is it craft but if it’s painted, is it fine art? And so, portions of this piece are felt painted by me; portions are felt handmade by me. From a distance these arbitrary boundaries of paint and fiber connect and blend. So too, the labels- fine art, craft, fine craft, the art of craft, the craft of art….. Does it really matter? While not intentional in the creation, I find that my work, once completed, seems to reference “something” that feels familiar to the viewer. This reference is how each piece finds it’s name. Using plaiting, one of my favored techniques, one is invited to take a closer look at the surface; see where colors meet and blend; where yarn leads the eye. The beauty is in the details.
