The creative process is one of discovery and as an artist where I intended to go is not necessarily where I end up. This piece started out all about a dramatic “line” carving through thick fiber. As it evolved; however, another theme began to emerge. First there was the felt itself, with a surface of color and line that began to remind me of a landscape. As it was cut to allow for the dramatic line running through it, the depth of the felt began to form a wall around the line- much like a river within a canyon. The grain in the wood canvas, originally intended to be painted, held yet another reference- much like topographical lines on a map and I began to paint lines on the grain to bring one’s attention to it. Even the large ungrained void at the bottom of the canvas began to take on a significance as everything seems to pour in- or out- of it. Media: Handmade Felt, Acrylic, on Wood Dimensions: 30" x 40"
