Working intuitively with color is a large part of my process when making felt. The decision to cut the felt into strips and rework it on the canvas comes from my belief that this encourages the viewer to look more closely at what is happening on the surface. Colors merge and contrast- an interplay that brings the eye to the details. And I believe in the beauty of the details. But the surface as a whole tells another story and invites the viewer to see something else, something larger. While not intentional in the creation, I find that my work, once completed, seems to reference “something” the viewer might recognize. In this case it’s the cosmos- filled with galaxies, trails of gases, colorful explosions of new stars forming and old stars imploding. And just as if we really could take a picture of it, it might end up in our photo album, the metal corners grounding our “snapshot”.
