The creative process is one of discovery and as an artist where I intended to go is not necessarily where I end up. The felt for this piece was made with the intention of plaiting the strips; however, the deliberate color gradation of the fiber proved stronger visually laid out vertically. The spaces between the strips of felt allows one to see the layering of the felt and it becomes apparent that the gradation from dark to light on the surface of the felt is in contrast to the light to dark gradation on the bottom layer closest to the canvas. As a result, color both disappears into the background and emerges in contrast to it on these two levels adding a complexity to what might appear at first to be a simple and straightforward pattern. This piece speaks to and explores two dialogues. the first dialogue is within myself. I love to paint and I love making felt; which do I choose. The second speaks to a dialogue about the external product of the creative process- if it’s fiber, is it craft but if it’s painted, is it fine art? And so, portions of this piece are felt painted by me; portions are felt handmade by me. From a distance these arbitrary boundaries of paint and fiber connect and blend. So too, the labels- fine art, craft, fine craft, the art of craft, the craft of art….. Does it really matter? Media: Handmade Felt, Acrylic, Gouache on Canvas Dimensions: 24" x 48"
